Introducing the Free ARFID Starter Kit

When someone first learns about ARFID, it can feel overwhelming.

You may be a parent trying to understand why mealtimes have become so stressful. You may be a teen or young adult who knows that eating feels harder for you than it seems to feel for others. You may be a teacher, school counselor, coach, or friend who wants to support someone but does not know where to begin.

That is why the National ARFID Foundation created the free ARFID Starter Kit.

The ARFID Starter Kit is a practical, easy-to-understand guide designed to help individuals, families, schools, and supporters better understand Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and take the first steps toward support.

Why We Created the Starter Kit

ARFID is often misunderstood. Many people hear “picky eating” and assume the solution is simple: just try more foods, push harder, or wait for the person to grow out of it.

But for many people with ARFID, food can feel overwhelming, unsafe, stressful, or even impossible. ARFID can affect daily life, school, travel, friendships, family meals, and overall well-being.

We created this guide because people deserve a clear starting point. Not everyone knows what ARFID is. Not everyone knows what signs to look for. Not everyone knows what questions to ask a doctor, therapist, dietitian, or school counselor.

The Starter Kit is meant to make that first step easier.

What Is Included in the ARFID Starter Kit?

The free guide includes simple, practical sections that explain ARFID in a way that is easy to understand and share with others.

Inside the Starter Kit, you will find:

A clear explanation of ARFID: The guide explains what ARFID is, how it can show up, and why it is different from typical picky eating.

ARFID vs. picky eating: A simple comparison helps families and supporters understand when food struggles may be more serious than ordinary picky eating.

Warning signs to look for: The guide includes signs that someone may need additional support, including limited food variety, distress around meals, avoidance of social eating situations, fatigue, weight or growth concerns, and anxiety around food.

When to seek urgent help: The Starter Kit includes a reminder that medical concerns should be taken seriously and that families should contact qualified healthcare professionals when eating restriction is affecting health or daily functioning.

Who can help:The guide explains the possible roles of doctors, therapists, dietitians, specialists, occupational therapists, and feeding professionals.

Questions to ask providersFamilies can use the appointment checklist to prepare for conversations with doctors, therapists, or dietitians.

Helpful language for parents and supporters:The guide offers examples of what to say instead of phrases like “just eat it” or “you’re being picky.”

School and teen support:There are sections for schools, teens, and young adults that address school lunch, social events, travel, sports, college preparation, and eating around others.

A personal ARFID snapshot worksheetThe worksheet helps individuals identify safe foods, difficult situations, support people, and barriers around eating.

Who Is the Starter Kit For?

The ARFID Starter Kit was created for:

  • Individuals who think they may have ARFID

  • Parents and caregivers

  • Teens and young adults

  • School counselors, nurses, and teachers

  • Friends and supporters

  • Coaches and activity leaders

  • Anyone trying to better understand ARFID

Whether you are just learning about ARFID or trying to explain it to someone else, the Starter Kit is designed to be a helpful first step.

A Resource, Not a Diagnosis

The National ARFID Foundation is an educational organization. We are not a medical provider, and the Starter Kit does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Instead, the guide is meant to help people become more informed, ask better questions, and connect with qualified professionals when needed. If someone is medically unstable, unable to eat enough, rapidly losing weight, fainting, dehydrated, or in immediate danger, families should seek medical or emergency care.

Why This Matters

Since launching in November 2024, the National ARFID Foundation has worked to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and connect people with ARFID-related resources. Our website now reaches around many monthly visitors, and we continue to hear from people looking for clearer information and support. The Starter Kit is part of our effort to make ARFID easier to understand and less isolating for the people and families affected by it. No one should have to feel alone while trying to understand ARFID. No one should be dismissed as “just picky” when their experience is more complicated. And no family should have to start from scratch without guidance.

Download the Free ARFID Starter Kit

The ARFID Starter Kit is now available for free on the National ARFID Foundation website.

Download it, read it, share it with a parent, bring it to a provider appointment, send it to a school counselor, or use it as a starting point for a conversation.

Together, we can help more people understand ARFID, recognize when support may be needed, and take the first steps toward care, compassion, and awareness.
